24 Term 3 Week 9
As we approach the end of Term 3, and look forward to a well deserved relaxing break, we have had the chance to reflect on what has been a extremely busy term for our students. On reflection, we look back and we can be proud of our students and school community as we have been able to pack this term with numerous whole school events. This term we have had our students perform musically at the school concert, dress up as a favourite character for Book Week, celebrate our Italian curriculum with Italian Day, and made sure we are looking out for one another by acknowledging R U OK? Day. Our students have had the opportunity to learn how to ride a bike during Bike Ed, have visited the SA Museum, the Marine Discovery Centre, and the Living Kaurna Cultural centre, and our Year 3s and 6s have attended camps. On the sporting field – we have had children attend the Cross Country carnival, SAPSASA Athletics, SAPSASA Basketball (with our girls team progessing to the Finals in Term 4), we won the Boys SAPSASA Knock Out competitions in both Netball and Aussie Rules Football this term, and we also won both the girls and boys Touch Football competitions organised by the Catholic Schools Sport Association.
These above events are not successful without the support of the whole school community including our parent body, and we thank you for this support as this provides us with an opportunity to continue to provide such a rich diverse learning opportunities for our students to thrive, and flourish. We look forward to the following events occurring next week to finish off an exciting Term 3.
Market Day – Wednesday 25th September
Next Wednesday the 25th September, we will hold our annual Year 6 Market Day. This day is organised and run by our year 6 cohort, who have been planning the day as a part of their Business and Economics studies.
The day will include a whole school liturgy in the Church at 10.00am followed by the Market Day stalls, which will take place between recess and lunch. This involves the Year 6 students setting up a range of stalls and all classes get to come and enjoy what is on offer. All students across R-6 are invited to bring some money to spend at the Markets. The goods and services provided by the Year 6 classes range from food stalls, lucky dips, lolly bags, dart throw, basketball shootout, mini golf, and a jellybean guess. All stalls are priced between 50c and $2. It is recommended that students bring in no more than $5-$10 to spend at the markets. Students across R-6 will have approximately one hour to enjoy the market stalls before returning to their classrooms.
Money raised from the market stalls will be donated to Catholic Charities, as a part of Catholic Charities month. During this time, Catholic schools throughout South Australia play a crucial role in fundraising to assist the many local agencies currently supported by Catholic Charities. We look forward to sharing our fundraising total and photos of the event the first newsletter of Term 4.
Catholic Schools Music Festival – Where Dreams Begin – Thursday 26th September
Next week 15 of our Year 5/6 students will be performing at the Catholic Schools Music Festival at the Festival Theatre. The CSMF has been performing since 1989, and is the opportunity for students from across all Catholic Schools in South Australia to come together to perform their musical skills to over a thousand members of the audience across four nights of performance. Our choir has been practising the songs for most of the year and the big night is finally here – as we along with approximately 14 other schools – will perform on Thursday the 26th of September. We thank, Ms. Aisling McCorry-Jenkinson for her commitment, passion, energy and expertise in leading our talented group of singers through this memorable experience. We hope they have a fantastic night.
Save the Date – Sports Day Friday 18th October (Week 1, Term 4)
Sports Day is just around the corner – and we are returning to Bowker Street Oval this year. Information and permission forms were sent home this week, and we are asking for permission forms to be returned by the last day of Term 3 (Friday 27th September). Please note that students will need to be dropped at the oval between8:20am and 8.45am for a 9am start, with no OSHC available on this morning. The day will finish around 1:45pm, with students collected from the oval. There will be transport back to school for students required to attend OSHC in the afternoon (for students that require OSHC please ensure the correct box is ticked on the returned permission form).
Term 4 – upcoming dates
As we come to the end of a busy Term 3, we also prepare for a number of major whole school events in Term 4. Please take some time to look at the events calendar within the newsletter, which includes many of the key dates for Term 4.
Thank you

Dear School Families,
Stella Maris Parish School is a place that believes in and fosters the values of Inclusivity, Compassion, Courage and Respect. We can see this in our learning, our classrooms and our school yard. We are always looking for new ways to model and practise these values and have identified an opportunity to offer more diverse play options to our students.
Indoor Lunch Time Clubs will be held throughout the term on Monday, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. They will have a General Theme each day so students can know what type of activity to expect.
Monday - Board Games
Tuesday - Mindfulness Club
Wednesday - Art Club
Clubs will be held on the ground floor of the new building and will begin after student's eating time. The pack up bell will go 10 minutes before the lunch bell to allow students to pack up and have time to use toilet and have a drink before going back to class.
Play is an essential part of the school day, and is important for boosting social connection, emotional wellbeing and also for self regulation. Play looks different for all students and we are hoping that the clubs offer a different style of play to that already on offer in the park, the playground and courts. Students will have an inviting space to play in a small group or to still feel connected while playing alongside others, and to follow their interests that benefit from a quieter area. The library has offered a space for students in the past and can now be redefined for a quiet reading space during the lunch times it is open.
Year 6 students will help in the promotion of these clubs to all students, please look out for the posters around school and take the opportunity to talk to your child and hear what they have to say about what play options they enjoy accessing and meets their needs during the school day.
We are so lucky to have so many options here at Stella that includes;
The Park, Basketball Courts, Playground (Everyday)
Library (Tues - Thursday)
Lunchtime Clubs (Monday - Wednesday)
School Garden (Monday Recess times).
Thankyou,
Emily Hughes
Pastoral Care Support
To our families and school community,
Wow how quickly this term has passed, the children have enjoyed many experiences and activities including Camping role play, exploring Lego kits using instruction books to make complex creations, recreate different natural environments and settings with knetic sand, shells, rocks, animals, sea creatures and a range of other resources, they have engaged in many cooking and craft activities that have seen some delicious food made and some amazing creations, the terms incursion with Cube sport running some basketball and soccer skill program, this has seen children build on their skills and confidence with their ball skills and participate in some fun games to encourage participation in active play. Next term we will be offering a musical theatre incursion, this will provide opportunities for children to combine music and drama while continually encouraging active play for physical and mental well-being. We will confirm the day of the week this will be offered as soon as possible
As the weather warms we follow Our Patch’s sun safe policy and monitor the UV rating, with this rating is 3 or higher we provide sunscreen and implement no hat no outside play, as the teachers prefer children to leave hats at school or children forget to put them in their bags when leaving class, we encourage a spare hat for oshc to be kept in their bag, this doesn’t need to be a school hat, it just needs to be broader brim or Legionnaire for good sun protection, if you child is sensitive to sunscreen please supply a tube for your child to use, and complete a medical plan to give permission for personal sunscreen to be used by your child.
As the holidays are nearly here and the bookings are filling up, we remind parents to book in now to ensure we can staff according to the needs of all our families. We have a great program with lots of fun activities, themed days, incursions and excursions including bowling, funtopia, remote control racing and bricks for kids to keep children engaged, active and have a fun and enjoyable school holidays. During the holiday program please ensure children have a packed recess and lunch, a unsafe hat, no caps and a drink bottle, we provide breakfast and afternoon tea. If you are booked in for an excursion, please ensure you arrive by 8.30 so children can be organised for a orderly and prompt departure.
Term 4 we will be running a cooking club on Friday. We will be exploring a range of recipes that can provide some healthy recess/lunchbox options. If your child loves to cook, please be sure to book them in for our Friday cooking club experiences.
We hope you all have a great break over the holidays and look forward to seeing you throughout the holiday program or in term 4.
From your friendly Oshc Staff and Patch Leader Linda Dunk
